St. Paul's Hospital

St. Paul's Hospital was built in 1969 to serve the poor. It currently has 300 beds, has an annual average of 100,000 patients and a catchment population of more than 5 million. There are 800 clinical and non-clinical staff in over 13 departments.

History

The Medical School has been opened in the new Millennium era of Ethiopia, (which is 7 years behind the Gregorian calendar) in order to alleviate the severe inadequacy of medical doctors in the country. In line with various encouraging efforts performed by ministry of health in this regard, one can certainly assure that the newly opened school, with practical new curriculum (INTEGRATED CURRICULUM), providing much-needed medical professionals to the people of Ethiopia.

The school was established by the federal ministry of health of Ethiopia as Professor Gordon Williams of the Department of Urology at the Hammersmith Hospital in London its first dean who is currently the medical director of Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa.

The current minister of health, Dr.Tedros Adhanom, has been closely following the situations in the school.

Student Body

The students were selected by written exam and structured interview with their previous educational background and their motive to work in the homeland accredited. The students are very enthusiastic and came from all the regions, with emerging regions given consideration. Unlike other medical schools in the country, the college gives special attention to female candidates and the percentage of female students has now reached a little over forty percent. With the new maternity and chidren's hospital and college complex under construction, the college envisages to become a model in integrated curriculum with undergraduate and graduate health sciences program. The school has already created strong linkage with local and international institutions, like Addis Ababa and Jimma universities, Tulane and Michigan universities as well as Open University. The Ethiopian Diaspora have also shown keen interest in helping the college improve its capacity.

Leadership

The current provost is Dr.Mesfin Araya (MD, PhD); who has been the developer and medical director of Amanuel hospital and later head of the department of Psychiatry at Addis Ababa University, where however he still sees patients and teaches Psychiatry at the Addis Ababa University.
